Bimbo Bakeries, the parent company of Heiner’s Bakery in Huntington, has opened its new 40,000-square-feet distribution center. During an open house Saturday, Mike Stearns, a sales executive with Bimbo, said the new distribution center is a welcome expansion and will allow the bakeries in Huntington to run more smoothly.
During his speech, Stearns also made sure to highlight the importance of community regarding the success of Heiner’s and Bimbo.
“I want to thank each and every one of you,” Stearns said. “All of you here, your families, anyone who purchases Heiner’s bread, helped make this expansion happen. Without your support, we wouldn’t be here today.”
Stearns said he could not comment on the number of jobs created with the distribution expansion, but said during his speech that this new facility means great things for the future of Heiner’s and Bimbo in the Tri-State.
Bill Dingus, executive director of the Lawrence Economic Development Corporation, said having a global company like Bimbo in the area is great for the economy, and he’s proud to have brought their business to The Point.
“This is a world-class organization, and we’re lucky to have them here,” Dingus said. “It’s also good for them. In the past, if you tried to drive by Heiner’s in Huntington in the evening, you would see trucks out in the streets because they didn’t have enough room. Now, they can run distribution from here where there is plenty of room.”
Dingus said what made The Point attractive to Bimbo is its convenient location just off U.S. 52 and only a few miles from Interstate 64.
Bimbo Bakeries’ Heiner’s location is at 1300 Adams Ave. in Huntington. Bimbo acquired Heiner’s in 2011 in a transaction with Sara Lee. Bimbo Bakeries USA, the U.S. corporate arm of the Mexico-based Grupo Bimbo, is headquartered in Horsham, Pennsylvania.
