UPDATE: Carbon finishing plant expected to bring 200 jobs to Ironton

LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) — Around 200 jobs are expected to be created by a new plant coming to Ironton, according to Dr. Bill Dingus, executive director of the Lawrence Economic Development Corporation.

Dingus says the announcement is a sign of the rise in industrial development in the Tri-State.

“It’s interesting because we’ve gone for what seems like years and had very little big activity and, all of a sudden, it’s just day after day we’re meeting with different groups and different individuals that could lead to more growth for the Tri-State,” Dingus said.

A carbon finishing plant was announced by Green EnviroTech Holdings (GETH), which has headquarters in California.

The plant will be built at the former DOW Ethafoam site in Ironton, and construction is expected to begin soon. According to a news release from the company, the plant could have as many as three buildings with more than 170,000 square feet of space for additional carbon processing lines.

“I am very pleased that we will start work on constructing our first carbon black finishing line in our centralized Carbon Finishing Plant in Ironton, Ohio,” said Chris Bowers, CEO of GETH, in a news release. “I would like to express my thanks to Dr. Bill Dingus for his excellent help and support in closing the deal in Ironton. We look forward to working with the local population in Ironton and to a long and very productive partnership with the LEDC.”

“We are pleased to bring the first tenant into the former DOW Ethafoam site within only a few months of closing on that transaction. We will work with the GETH group of companies to fully utilize the site and grow the number of jobs to over 200. The LEDC is thankful to the many local and state organizations that will be contributing funds to establish the infrastructure needed to utilize the former DOW site including Jobs Ohio and American Electric Power.”

Dingus says the 200 jobs won’t be available all at once. When the plant first begins production, only about 21 positions will be open. But as time goes on and production increases, more and more jobs will be added.

The jobs won’t just benefit those going to work, but the entire community by bringing families in to town and filling up classrooms, and other business.

“Some years our enrollment will be up, some years it will be down, and a lot of that is due to jobs,” said Charlie Kitchen.

Kitchen, who teaches school in Lawrence County, says he’s noticed enrollment go up and down through the years because of job loss.

“Families can’t make it without having those jobs and they have to go elsewhere to do that,” he said.

Dingus says more developments are coming, but details have not been announced yet.

There’s no word on when the hiring process will begin.
