Founded in1890 as The Hocking Manufacturing Company, Logan Clay manufactures sewer pipe, flue lining, decorative chimney tops and wall coping using a special blend of locally mined clay.
Using a high-pressure extrusion process, they produce piping from 4- to 24-inches in diameter which is then fired to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The ring process, called vitrification, bonds the molecules in the clay making it strong and impervious to almost all chemicals.
“Our pipe is the world’s longest-lasting product for sanitary sewer systems,” said Dick Brandt, chairman and president, “and we believe our modern manufacturing processes produce the highest quality pipe in the nation.”
Although clay pipe has been used for 5,000 years, the Logan plant has regularly upgraded their equipment for production and energy efficiency including computer controls on their tunnel kilns.
Brandt attributes the company’s success to its employees, many of whom work there for 35 to 40 years; many of the employees posing for a 125th anniversary photo were in a similar photo taken in 1988.
“The strong element of trust that exists between management and employees has enabled the company to grow and succeed through the years,” said Brandt. The company has 85 employees.
