PIKETON — The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has selected Wastren Advantage Inc. (WAI) of Piketon to perform analytical services at the 222-S Laboratory in Hanford, WA. The two-year contract with three one-year options is valued at $44.6 million.
WAI President and CEO Steve Moore said his team is ready to expand its support at DOE’s largest cleanup project by operating the Hanford site’s primary on-site laboratory for analysis of highly radioactive samples. WAI also provides landfill management and operations services to Washington Closure Hanford, located in Richland, WA.
“As a current contractor supporting the Hanford cleanup mission, WAI is fully committed to providing high-quality, customer-focused services at the 222-S Laboratory,” Moore said. “We are fortunate that DOE values WAI as a solid performer in this critical area.”
For more than 40 years, reactors located at Hanford produced plutonium for America’s defense program. All of the facilities, structures and materials associated with that defense mission are now being deactivated, decontaminated and demolished. Most of the solid wastes, contaminated soil and building debris are being taken to the Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility (ERDF), which WAI runs as the managing partner of WAI Stoller Disposal Operations (WSDO).
The 222-S Laboratory accepts samples from Hanford’s most radioactive and hazardous chemical wastes. The new contract is expected to cover 25,000 analyses each year of inorganic, organic and radiochemical samples. Work is done under fume hoods or in the lab’s 11 radiation hot cells with operators outside the cells operating tools within the cells.
WAI is US DOE’s prime contractor for facility site services at the Portsmouth Site in Ohio and the TRU Waste Processing Center at the Oak Ridge Operations Office in Tennessee. WAI is also a major subcontractor performing decontamination and decommissioning activities at the US DOE’s gaseous diffusion plants in Portsmouth, OH, and Paducah, KY.
WAI is a Small Business Administration-Certified 8(a) company headquartered in Piketon with project offices throughout the United States.
